Of course, good graphics and a good story are fine, but they don't mean much without good gameplay to go with it -- and that's where PotC falls down.

The freeform gameplay idea is sound enough. You can choose where and when you go, what missions you want to take, whether to work as a government stooge, become a trader or go pirate, and whether or not you want to participate in the story. Unfortunately, most of the non-story based missions are rather boring, as is trading. There's no economic model at all. Every island always trades, buys, and bans the exact same products.

The last, of course, assumes that you actually manage to play the game at all. Put simply, this is a game that's so incomplete and badly balanced that it's almost impossible to play at all. First, the interface is simply atrocious. The default keyboard setup is nearly impossible to use. Even when the keys are remapped, though, it seems like to you have to press an awful lot of keys to do even the simplest things.

Even better, when you buy and sell personal inventory items, you won't be able to sell them unless they've been unequipped -- meaning you have to go to another screen two or three key presses , unequip the item, and then come back to sell it another two or three presses. Then there are the things that are simply missing -- like a map of the entire game world. While navigating my ship on the ocean, it'd be nice if I actually knew where I was going rather than sailing at random hoping to find the right island.

It gets even worse once you get into combat. Despite the game's supposed RPG-Like emphasis on improving your ability scores, swordfighting is all about reflexes, movement, and timing. While first person combat is somewhat simplistic, it is also used with good effect. The storyline itself, while a bit contrived, is also fairly accurate to the time period, so no qualms there.

A few minor flaws mar this game. There are still some bugs that cause the title to crash to the desktop, as well as some scripting errors for things that are supposed to happen, and of course, no multiplayer.

This and kludgy controls aside, Pirates of the Caribbean breaks the mold of movie-inspired titles this year; and in fact, had Disney not pasted the pirate head in there, the title and the movie would have little to nothing to do with each other. Highly recommended to adventure title aficionados and gamers of all stripes.

Not to be confused with the movie, Pirates of the Caribbean is a RPG that creates an entirely new experience. Although the absence of Johnny Depp may cause some disappointment or maybe not , choosing a direction that is unique instead of following the movie is generally a better way to go. The game isn't without its problems, however, it has a number of bright spots to help balance the game out. As a RPG, Pirates of the Caribbean does create a multifaceted gameplay structure that keeps the game interesting for much longer then you might expect.

Although is does start slow, it's not long before you're sailing the seas on the latest quest for gold. You'll be hiring crew, seeking out treasure, and collecting gold for services among many other tasks.

It's the different aspects of the game that help it shine combined with the depth of details scattered throughout. For instance, there will be ship fighting on the seas with numerous attacking strategies possible, tons of exploration both by ship and land, and many issues to look after like keeping from becoming a victim of mutiny from your crew and protecting or destroying your reputation.

Personal combat is also a large part of this game like in most RPGs, but is poorly implemented.
