Upon making first contact with the Sawi, McCain reassured them, and Hadi, who was fluent in his mother tongue of Atohwaem, as well as Kayagar and Sawi, conveyed the message to the Sawi people.

Recognizing the value Hadi would have for making further contact with the Sawi, especially in learning the Sawi language, they invited him to return with them back to Pirimapun, and he accepted, along with a young Sawi man, Er. This would mark the beginning of the Richardsons ministry among the Sawi. They build their house in the Sawi village of Kamur, and they continued serving among them until the mids.

During this time, they created a Sawi alphabet so that the Bible could be translated, which resulted in the Sawi being taught to read.

Don Richardson translated the New Testament into Sawi by the end of their tenure there, and, a large, thousand-person capacity church building, made of native poles, was dedicated in the summer of They left the Sawi in the mids, since the Sawi church leadership was strong and another missionary couple had arrived to assist the Sawi church. Of course, given the length of time the Richardsons spent among the Sawi, much could be said, but, for our purposes, we will focus on a few pivotal stories of their ministry below.

The rivalry between the Kayagar and Sawi became apparent as Richardson, who sought to begin building his house in the Sawi village of Kamur, was intercepted on his way by the Kayagar in an attempt to have him live among them. Consequently, among the Kayagar arose a loud clamor to sway Don in their direction, which also doubled as a test of his resistance to intimidation.

If he was swayed by the Kayagar, the outset of his ministry would be tainted. With this in mind, Don persisted in his course, forcefully bellowing his intention to continue on to Kamur, resulting in the Kayagar allowing him to pass through.

Upon arriving, Don sent gifts to the chiefs of Kamur as an invitation to meet with him. During their first encounter of this, a battle broke out, in close proximity to their home, between the Kamur and Haenam village. Initially, Don was unsure what action to take, but, contrary to the caution of some to avoid the role, Don decided to act as a peacemaker in this conflict and the conflict ended. After five strenuous months, during which time Don and his family were placed between these warring villages, Don came to the realization that unless peace was made, he and his family would have to leave the area.

When he voiced this to the leaders of the respective villages, they told him that they were willing to make peace between them. Live in your new world…. Caroline Leaf. Rick Bayless.
